- In May 2002 I had a serious accident in my Drifter. This is chronicled in my writs to the Fly UL list around about July. The accident was my fault and I would never want it to dissuade anyone from participating in this activity. I am a much better pilot because of what I learned. Here are those things.
1. Use the runway! All that is available to your disposal when you takeoff.
2. Keep that nose down and airspeed up on takeoff.
3. Always, land straight forward if the engine quits you on takeoff.
The seriousness of my accident was a result of not following these 3 simple rules that I had been taught, what I had taught others, but for some reason wasn't implementing that day. Did I really know these simple rules then?
The accident cost me a lot. A wonderful airplane, two broken legs, that will likely never be at 100% again, and untold medical bill$.
I've done it all (well most things anyway) skiing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, boat racing, hang gliding. To me, none of these match the fun and freedom of flying around in an ultralight. I hope I never get used to that feeling when the wheels lift off the ground. What a kick!
I flew again, only 4 months after my accident. I will be flying my own bird once again, by the end of summer, 2003. I invite all who have ever dreamed of flying their own airplane to try it. Chances are, you'll love it as much as I do.
